Former India captain Sourav Ganguly spoke on the ‘Spirit of the Cricket’ debate which ignited after Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in Ashes 2023. Sourav Ganguly feels that Australia could have avoided that dismissal.
Jonny Bairstow got out through stumping in the 2nd innings of England vs Australia 2nd Test at Lord’s. Jonny Bairstow left his crease after leaving the ball. Aussie keeper Alex Carey removed his bails and Australia appealed for dismissal, which 3rd umpire claimed was out. However, Bairstow was not trying to take a run at the moment and many slammed his dismissal.

Sourav Ganguly Speaks On Jonny Bairstow’s Controversial Dismissal
During an exclusive interview with RevSportz, former BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly was questioned about his views on the Spirit of The Game debate that became hot after Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal in the Ashes 2023 Test. Ganguly feels that Australia could have avoided the appeal as Bairstow was not trying to take a run.
“The hottest topic right now in the world of cricket is Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal in the Ashes and the entire ‘Spirit of the game’ debate. How do you see it?”, Ganguly was asked.
“It could have been avoided. By the law, he was out as he just walked out of the crease, but I don’t think he was trying to take a run. Australia could have avoided that dismissal”, the former India opener replied.

After the dismissal, England skipper Ben Stokes showcased his unhappiness with umpires and Australian players. Stokes was at the non-striker’s end when the event happened. Jonny Bairstow’s wicket was a crucial breakthrough for Australia in the match, who won the game by 43 runs in the end.

In the Lord’s Test, Australia batted first and posted 416-10 on the board in 1st innings. England were all-out for 325 later. Posting 279 in the 2nd innings, England set up a target of 371 for the hosts. Ben Stokes shattered 155 runs in the final innings. However, he lost his wicket towards the end and could not lead England to victory.
