England’s brilliant performance in the recently-concluded Ashes series might have vindicated their much-talked-about ‘Bazball’ approach. Still, it has not made a big impression on Australia’s spin spearhead, Nathan Lyon.
The hard-fought five-match series ended 2-2 as England and Australia played out one of the best Test series played in recent memory. Australia won the first two Tests by 2 wickets and 43 runs before England bounced back to win the third Test. The hosts were looking set to win the fourth Test too but rain shattered their hopes of earning a victory.
In the fifth Test, England beat Australia by 49 runs to draw level in the series. Ben Stokes and his teammates have earned praise from all over for the brand of cricket they displayed throughout the series. However, it looks like they have not managed to earn the respect of Nathan Lyon. The off-spinner played the first two Tests before an injury in the third game ruled him out of the series.
“I know everyone keeps talking about BazBall, to be honest, I didn’t really see BazBall… throughout my two Tests against them,” Nathan Lyon told SEN’s The Run Home.
“I’m 2-0 in my Tests against BazBall… I look at the Australian cricket team and the batters we’ve had, David Warner for example… I’ve seen him score hundreds in a session… and that’s off playing an attacking brand of cricket.
“I think there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors with BazBall, if I’m being honest with you, and I feel like if you’re going to play an aggressive brand of cricket anyway, it’s about being able to go up and down in gears and understanding the moments in the game,” he added.
Nathan Lyon vows to return to England:
Nathan Lyon has also vowed to return to England in 2027 and end Australia’s long wait to win the Ashes on English soil. Australia have not won the Ashes series in England since 2001.
“I tell you one thing, I’m definitely not joking about going back to (the) Ashes,” said Nathan Lyon.
“I feel like having this injury, coming home and watching the guys play the three Test matches has really driven me to get back there and make sure I’m back playing cricket.
“My hunger for the game has probably gone to a new level, this has allowed me to have a little bit more time off during my rehab, sit back, reflect and reset some goals and find a really decent purpose for me.
“I’m definitely not writing off going back to England for the Ashes… the finish line for me hasn’t even popped up in my eyesight yet, I’ve still got a lot of cricket left in me in my eyes and a lot to offer the Renegades, New South Wales cricket but also Australia,” added the veteran spinner who will be 39 when the next Ashes in England takes place.
