Mitchell Marsh, on Thursday (July 6), played one of his best knocks in international cricket to help Australia post a respectable total in the first innings of the ongoing third Ashes Test against England at Headingley.

Marsh had not played a Test since 2019 and he could not have asked for a tougher situation to walk in to bat. Australia was in all sorts of trouble on the opening day of the Test after losing four wickets in the first session. The score was 85 for 4 when Marsh walked out to bat and joined Travis Head in the middle.

And in no time he put Australia on top by launching a stunning counterattack. The allrounder completed his fifty off just 59 balls while it took him 102 deliveries to complete his third Test ton. He was eventually dismissed for run-a-ball 118. Marsh’s stunning knock was studded with 17 fours and four sixes. Thanks to his knock, Australia recovered from a poor start and posted 263 in the first innings.

Mitchell Marsh delighted with his century:

Speaking after the end of the day’s play, Mitchell Marsh expressed his delight over the knock in his comeback game. Speaking to BBC Sport, Marsh stated that it felt amazing to wear the Baggy Green again after starting the series as fellow allrounder Cameron Green’s backup. Marsh also opened up on how he had been planning to play in the ongoing series for quite some time and also missed the last home season for the same reason.

“It was pretty amazing. I’m a little lost for words. It was a crazy day. It was nice to be back wearing my baggy green and it was a long time coming. It has taken a lot of hard work. I chose to have ankle surgery and missed the last Australian summer to get on this tour, knowing I was going to be Greeny’s understudy. So I’m really proud to be able to get back,” he said.

“I feel part of the squad even though I haven’t played and that’s a testament to our leadership. That’s why we have had a lot of guys come in and contribute at different times. I think I’m the first man to score a Test hundred on a UK holiday.

“Coming in before lunch today was some of the toughest conditions I have come in in my Test career so far. I’m really proud of the work I have done mentally to overcome nerves and get into the contest as quickly as possible,” he added.

Marsh also made an impact with the ball by taking the crucial wicket of Zak Crawley in the final session of the day. In reply to Australia’s first innings total of 263 runs, England finished the day on 68 for 3. Meanwhile, Australia are leading the five-match series 2-0 and a draw or a win in the upcoming game will see them retain the Ashes.
