Australia star Mitchell Starc has revealed Pat Cummins would have lost the toss ahead of the ongoing fifth Ashes Test too had he listened to Marnus Labuschagne. All eyes were on the Australia skipper as he made his way to the field for the all-important toss.
Pat Cummins was on the verge of an unwanted 118-year first as an Australian Test captain after his struggle with the toss. He might be one of the best bowlers in the world at present but it would not be wrong to say that the Australia captain is not very good when it comes to toss.

Pat Cummins had not won a single toss in the ongoing season in England. Last month, he lost the toss when Australia locked horns against India in the World Test Championship final. It was followed by four straight losses in the first four Ashes Tests against England.
Another loss at The Oval would have made him equal Joe Darling’s record of losing all five tosses in a five-Test series. The former Australia captain had lost all the tosses during the series way back in 1905. Fortunately, Pat Cummins managed to end his poor run and won the toss at The Oval.

Mitchell Starc on Pat Cummins’ toss struggle:
Mitchell Starc was asked about Pat Cummins’ struggle with the coin when he was addressing the media at the end of the first day’s play. In reply, the left-arm pacer revealed that Cummins would have ended up losing yet another toss had he decided to listen to Marnus Labuschagne.
In the first four Tests in this Ashes series, Cummins had called tails. And as he was getting ready for the fifth toss of the series, Labuschagne advised him to call head. Cummins, however, did not listen to Labuschagne and it paid off.

“There’s one area that we can all agree Pat Cummins has failed as a captain, and that’s in calling the right side of the coin. You have only mentioned it three times so far in this press conference,” asked the journalist.
“I am not the only one to mention it, no,” replied Starc.
The journalist then asked: “What did you all say? I am interested in what the bowlers said when he finally got one right today.”
In reply, Starc said: “Marnus was the only one that was pushing for him to start calling ‘heads’. Everyone else was ‘you have got to stick to your guns’. If you go 0-6 with the series on the tosses, it’s not even your fault, is it? Everyone’s pretty pleased he finally got one.”
