AUS vs ENG: Nathan Lyon All But Out Of The Ashes 2023 As Cricket Australia Delivers Worrying Update

Nathan Lyon’s participation in the remainder of the ongoing Ashes series looks highly unlikely as Australia have given a worrying update on the off-spinner.
The ace spinner had to be helped off the field by the team physio on day two of the ongoing second Test at Lord’s after he suffered a calf injury while he was fielding. While Australia would have hoped that the injury was not serious, the visuals on Friday (June 30) must have left them worried.

When he arrived at the ground with the Australian team, he was seen walking on crutches and wearing a white compression sock on his right calf. And the update from Cricket Australia is not at all promising as they have confirmed the off-spinner had suffered a “significant strain” to his calf which will require a “period of rehabilitation”.
“Nathan Lyon has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain. He will require a period of rehabilitation after this match is concluded. A decision regarding his availability for the remainder of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game,” read the statement from Cricket Australia.
Nathan Lyon all but out of the Ashes
The statement has made it pretty clear that Nathan Lyon’s participation in the Ashes 2023 is as good as over. The visitors could still call on him to bat in this match but he is unlikely to bowl for the rest of the series. The ongoing match was incidentally his 100th consecutive Test for Australia.
Lyon became the first-ever bowler in the history of the game to play 100 straight Tests. He has not missed a single Test for Australia since the 2013 Ashes but now looks set to be sidelined. In his absence, Australia are likely to include Todd Murphy in the team, and could make his Ashes debut during the Headingley Test next week.
As far as the match is concerned, Australia have done well so far. In the first innings, they scored 416 thanks to a century from Steve Smith and fifties from David Warner and Travis Head. In reply, England were on 278 for 4 at stumps on day two. Australia are leading the five-match series after winning the first Test by 2 wickets.
