Former England captain Michael Atherton feels the side will use the controversy or sense of unfairness over Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal as fuel for the remainder of the Ashes series.

The hosts are already losing 2-0 in the five-match series and will need an exceptional performance to get back into the game.

Since the conclusion of the Lord’s Test, a lot has been written about the incident involving Jonny Bairstow. Due to the fact that both captains were questioned about the incident during their press conference prior to the third game, it has not shown any signs of calming down. Additionally, the angry Headingley crowd in Leeds will not absolve the Australians of their crime.

“The controversy over the Bairstow stumping will galvanize”- Michael Atherton

Both teams will be fired up for the forthcoming third Test, with England looking to bounce back and Australia looking to clinch another win in order to retain the Urn. Atherton stated in his Times column that he expected the players’ high spirits to overcome the tiny margins:

“What they hope above all, though, is that the controversy over the Bairstow stumping will galvanize their players to the extent that the small margins that meant Australia prevailed in the first two matches are overcome. It is impossible to say how, or if at all, the post-Lord’s hubbub will affect either side, but the atmosphere will be such that the strongest characters and coolest heads will prevail” Michael Atherton said.

“The Ashes has run the gamut of controversies”- Michael Atherton

The uproar following Jonny Bairstow’s expulsion swiftly spread beyond the confines of the stadium. As a result of the heightened tensions, Usman Khawaja was confronted by MCC members in Lord’s iconic Long Room. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, also had an opinion on the subject because he supported Ben Stokes and the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ storyline.

“The Ashes has run the gamut of controversies, from sledging and chucking to bouncers and beyond, but no story in recent times, perhaps, has fed into so many strands of our shared cricketing history. When the prime ministers of both countries dive in, then you know the issue has cut through” Michael Atherton said.
