The 27th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was played between the Australia National Cricket Team and the New Zealand National Cricket Team at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala on Saturday, October 28.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first, the decision which backfired massively. Australian opener Travis Head finally returned to the playing XI after missing out on the last few matches due to injury and set the stage on fire.

Head smashed a spectacular century and built a tremendous 175-run partnership in 117 balls with veteran opener David Warner, who also batted magnificently but fell short of his ton.

The next three batters – Mitchell Marsh (36), Steve Smith (18), and Marnus Labuschagne (18) chipped in with crucial runs, before Glenn Maxwell (41) and Pat Cummins (37) played brutal innings to power Australia to a gigantic total of 388. Also, Josh Inglis contributed 38 runs and Australia became the first team to register three consecutive 350-plus scores in ODI history.

For New Zealand, the man with the golden arm Glenn Phillips was the top performer as he picked up three wickets for 37 runs. Also, Trent Boult bagged three wickets, Mitchell Santner took two wickets while James Neesham and Matt Henry picked one wicket.

Chasing the target, Devon Conway and Will Young played really well and provided the Black Caps with a good start. They added 61 runs together but were back in the hut in quick succession after failing to convert their starts into big scores.

Then, Rachin Ravindra joined forces with Daryl Mitchell and the duo added 96 runs in 86 balls to keep New Zealand in the game. They batted really well and frustrated the Australian bowlers.

Mitchell was unable to convert his start into a big score as he got out after hitting a fifty, but Rachin Ravindra made the most of his start and smashed a terrific ton. Rachin Ravindra was finally dismissed by skipper Pat Cummins in the 41st over. He was back in the hut after scoring 116 runs off 89 balls, with 9 fours and 5 sixes.

In the end, James Neesham fought exceptionally well, played a wonderful knock, and was well-supported by his teammates. However, he got run out on the second last ball of the last over, and the Black Caps suffered a heartbreak. Australia continued their winning momentum and registered a 5-run win in a thriller.
