Travis Head, on Saturday (October 28), made a sensational return to ODI cricket. The southpaw was sidelined due to a fractured thumb and missed Australia???s first five games in the ongoing ICC Men???s Cricket World Cup 2023.
He was finally fit to play on Saturday and Australia named him in the playing eleven for the ongoing game against Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Allrounder Cameron Green had to make way for the batter while Mitchell Marsh was demoted to number three in the batting order.
And Travis Head celebrated his return to the playing eleven in style by smashing a whirlwind century. In the third over of the game, Matt Henry bowled consecutive no-balls and Travis Head hit the resulting free-hits for two sixes to get going. He did not look back after that as he and his opening partner David Warner took the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners.
Thanks to the openers??? stunning onslaught, Australia reached their 50 in just 25 balls, 100 in just 53 balls, and 150 in just 89 balls. Australia also registered their highest-ever powerplay score and also the highest powerplay score of this World Cup as they collected 118 runs from the first 10 overs.
Glenn Phillips ends Travis Head???s knock:
Travis Head reached his fifty off just 25 balls as he smashed the fastest fifty of the ongoing World Cup on his comeback. And he continued to bat in the same manner after the half-century too. He was also dropped twice by the New Zealand fielders and the southpaw made the most of the reprieves.
He went on to complete his fourth ODI century in just 59 balls. It is his fastest-ever ODI century. Travis Head, however, did not last long after the century and had to depart after being clean-bowled by Glenn Phillips. He was batting on 109 when a skiddy delivery from the New Zealand spinner ended his knock.
Phillips had delivered the ball on the leg and middle stump and Head pegged back to play a cut shot. However, he was cramped for room and failed to make any contact with the ball whatsoever. The ball went on to crash into the middle stump.
