Australia stalwart David Warner will retire from Tests after the ongoing PAK vs AUS Test series. Speaking ahead of the match, David Warner urged Australia selectors to provide enough opportunities to whomever they pick as his replacement.
David Warner has been an outstanding opener for Australia in Tests for the last few years. After his retirement, Australia will need a powerful backup to follow his legacy as an opener. Currently, Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Matt Renshaw are three players in contention to take Warner’s spot as Test opener.
I’ve Always Played The Way That I Have To Entertain: David Warner
While speaking on Fox Cricket ahead of the PAK vs AUS 2nd Test in Melbourne, David Warner said that he has always tried to entertain the audience with his performances.
“I’ve always played the way that I have to entertain and to put bums on seats. I think that’s what’s important — giving back and making sure the fans are getting what they paid for. That’s No. 1 with Test cricket. It’s a tough game, it’s not easy”., Warner said during a chat with Mark Howard.
Talking about his successor in Test cricket, the 38-year-old said that selectors will go after players who like to go after the ball.
“I think it’s important and I think the selectors will continue to do this — we’ve got players like Travis Head, you’ve got Mitch Marsh, Cameron Green — guys who like going after the ball.
Warner also urged selectors that when they find his replacement, they should give him enough chances.
“How are we going to find these kids coming through? You’re going to find them through the Big Bash. It’s going to be a gutsy call to put someone out there in the middle, a bit like what they did with me, and experiment. I just hope that when they do, that person gets their chance, they’re given a good crack and it doesn’t chop and change,” he further said.
David Warner scored a decent knock of 38 runs in the PAK vs AUS 2nd Test in Melbourne. He also set up an opening stand of 90 runs with Usman Khawaja. The match commenced on Tuesday, December 26 at MCG.
