As Australia embarks on a new Test chapter without David Warner, Captain Pat Cummins has opened up on how things have been different for the team since the opener retired from Tests.
The veteran opener brought down the curtains on his illustrious Test career earlier this month after the Sydney Test against Pakistan. Warner was an indispensable part of Australia’s Test team since making his debut in the format in 2011. He ended his Test career as Australia’s most successful opener in Tests. No Australian opener has scored more runs than him in Tests.
And while it has not been long since Warner retired from Tests, the Australian team dynamics have already changed a lot. Pat Cummins has revealed that Travis Head has stepped up after Warner’s departure. Apart from being a leader on the field, Warner was also actively involved in extra-curricular activities, such as organizing rounds of golf, and places to eat.
“It’s been good. Davey’s stepped down and Travis Head has stepped up into the David Warner role. He’s hot on Whatsapp, he’s booked golf, he’s booked dinners,” said Pat Cumminsas as quoted by Fox.
“I know the coaches had to reintroduce themselves to each other now that they get a word in at dinner,” he joked.
Pat Cummins on life without David Warner:
Speaking further, Pat Cummins hailed Warner as a big personality and said that the team would miss the veteran opener. The Australia captain stated that the team would start feeling Warner’s absence more once they played a few games.
“Davey’s a big personality. He had a fantastic send-off in Sydney, we’re gonna miss him,” Pat Cummins said.
“It’s going to be a bit different. Once we play a few games back-to-back it will start hitting us that we lost a big personality around the group,” he added.
Meanwhile, Steve Smith has been confirmed as Warner’s replacement in the Australian Test team. The veteran batsman is set to open the innings for the first time in his Test career when Australia lock horns against West Indies in the two-match Test series, starting on Wednesday (January 17).
