The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Australia have gotten involved in the ongoing tussle between the cricket fraternity of the two nations following Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.
The final day of the hard-fought game was engulfed in a huge controversy when Bairstow was dismissed in the first session. The right-handed batsman was stumped by Alex Carey upon leaving the crease believing that the over was finished and the ball was dead. Australian players started celebrating as soon as Carey’s throw hit the stumps.
The on-field umpires referred the decision to the third umpire and the latter did not take long to give his decision in the favor of the Australian team. In the wake of the incident, the enraged English community has been heavily criticizing Australia.

British PM Rishi Sunak, who was at Lord’s for the second Test, also expressed his disappointment over the incident. Sunak agreed with England skipper Ben Stokes’ claims that Australia “broke the spirit of cricket” by dismissing Bairstow in such a manner.
“The Prime Minister agrees with Ben Stokes, and he said he simply wouldn’t want to win a game in the manner Australia did.
“The game did provide an opportunity to see Ben Stokes at his best and it was an incredible test match and he has confidence in the wall bounce back at Headingley,” said Sunak’s spokesperson.
Australia PM Anthony Albanese reacts:
With the Australian team facing the heat in England, Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has jumped in its defense. Albanese, on Tuesday (July 4), took to Twitter to back his country’s team over Bairstow’s contentious dismissal.
“Same old Aussies – always winning!” the prime minister tweeted. The phrase was likely a jibe at English fans who chanted “same old Aussies always cheating” after Bairstow was dismissed. Throwing his support behind the men’s and women’s teams, he tweeted:
“I’m proud of our men’s and women’s cricket teams, who have both won their opening two #Ashes matches against England. Same old Aussies – always winning!
Australia is right behind @ahealy77, @patcummins30 and their teams and look forward to welcoming them home victorious ?.”
