B-Love Kandy and Dambulla Sixers go head to head in the LPL 2024 opener in Pallekele on July 1. The match starts at 7.30 pm IST. Kandy are the defending champions of the Lankan Premier League.

Kandy won the final against Dambulla in 2023 in Pallekele as they successfully chased 148. B-Love Kandy won the title in 2023. Jaffna Kings won the title in 2021 and 2022. Jaffna Stallions won the inaugural title in 2020.

The five teams in the LPL 2024 edition are Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Sixers, Galle Marvels, Jaffna Kings, and Kandy—competing against each other twice during this period. The playoffs will take place in Colombo from July 18, with the finals set for July 21. The matches will start at 3.30 pm IST and 7.30 pm IST.

This time around the teams are very different from previous editions. Teams have been given new names after previous teams have been scrapped or have had controversies. The Dambulla Aura was renamed Dambulla Sixers after their previous owner Tamim Rahman was arrested for match-fixing charges. Thereafter, Sequoia Consultants through DeSilva Holdings got ownership of the Dambulla franchise and renamed it Dambulla Sixers.

The LPL will be an amalgamation of local Sri Lanka and international superstars. The league, now in its fifth edition, will feature international cricketers such as Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Agha Salman, Andre Fletcher, Fabian Allen, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Noor Ahmad, Rilee Rossouw, and Reeza Hendricks, among others.

Local stars such as Wanindu Hasaranga, Angelo Mathews, Isuru Udana, Maheesh Theekshana, and Kusal Mendis, will be participating in the tournament as well. The franchise tournament will hope that it is able to lessen the fans of the fans who have not seen their team succeed in ICC tournaments. Sri Lanka played poorly in the ICC 50-over World Cup and did not make it to the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2024.
