India's disappointing run in T20I cricket under new captain Shreyas Iyer is set to come under the scanner, with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirming that the board will conduct a detailed review after the ongoing ODI series against England.

The announcement comes after India suffered successive bilateral T20I series defeats against Ireland and England. While Ireland registered their first-ever T20I series win over India, England followed it up by clinching their maiden bilateral T20I series victory over the Men in Blue in a contest of two or more matches.

Key Points:

  • BCCI to conduct a detailed review of India's T20I team
  • Review will take place after the England ODI series ends on July 19
  • Devajit Saikia described India's current run as a "bad phase"
  • BCCI believes every team goes through difficult periods

What exactly did BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia say about India's poor run?

Speaking to IANS, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia admitted that India's T20I side is going through a difficult period but insisted the board would assess the reasons behind the slump before taking corrective steps.

"The thing is very simple. The Indian T20I team is going through a bad phase in their games against England and Ireland before. So, we have to do a review once this series is over. A bad phase comes for every team and right now, a bad phase is going on in terms of the performance of the men's T20I team.

"So, we will have to look into what are the problems they are facing and we will definitely try to sort it out once the series is over by doing a detailed review. The review will happen immediately after the ODI series ends in England on July 19."

Why has the BCCI decided to review the T20I team now?

The decision follows a disappointing stretch for India's T20I side. Shreyas Iyer's team first lost a two-match bilateral series against Ireland before conceding the five-match series against England after losing three completed matches, with the opening game ending in a washout.

India's defeats against Ireland and England have resulted in consecutive bilateral T20I series losses for the first time in more than seven years. Also, Shreyas Iyer entered the record books for the wrong reasons by becoming the first Indian captain to suffer five successive defeats in T20I cricket.

What does a BCCI review usually involve?

Although the BCCI has not outlined the exact agenda, such reviews typically go beyond simply analysing results.

The discussions generally involve feedback from the selectors, head coach and captain to assess how the team has performed across different departments. Batting, bowling and fielding performances are usually examined alongside tactical decisions taken during the series.

The review may also include an assessment of player fitness, workload management and squad planning for upcoming assignments. Selection philosophy, role clarity and whether the current combinations are delivering the desired results are often discussed before future squads are finalised.

The objective is usually to identify areas that require improvement and ensure the team is better prepared for the next phase of the international calendar rather than reacting to one series in isolation.

Could the review lead to changes in India's T20I setup?

At this stage, the board has not indicated that any major changes are imminent. However, the review could influence how India approach the shortest format going forward.

The discussions may focus on refining team combinations, evaluating whether certain players are best suited to specific roles, managing workloads and making tactical adjustments based on recent performances. The selectors could also reassess how they balance experienced players with emerging talent as India continue building towards future ICC events.

For now, there has been no suggestion from the BCCI that the review is intended to decide on coaching or leadership changes. Instead, the emphasis appears to be on understanding the reasons behind India's recent struggles and identifying practical solutions.

The review is set to begin after the three-match ODI series against England concludes on July 19, when the BCCI will analyse India's performances against Ireland and England before planning the next phase of the men's T20I setup.
