India's crushing defeat against England in the fourth T20I has created fresh problems for the head coach Gautam Gambhir. The nine-wicket loss not only ended India's hopes of winning the T20I series but has also increased the intense pressure on Gautam Gambhir.
After England took an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the ongoing five-match T20I series, questions are now being raised about the team's performances and the direction in which the new coaching staff is taking Indian cricket after the successful 2025-26 season. Amid this, Shreyas Iyer, Gautam Gambhir hold lengthy discussion after England series loss.
Back-to-back series losses put Gautam Gambhir under scanner
India lost the T20I series in Ireland and England within 15 days, raising serious concerns over the team’s direction. It is the first time India has lost a bilateral T20I series of two or more matches against England. It is also India's first T20I series defeat against England since 2019. After losing five of their last six T20I matches, the team's poor form has become a major concern.
As reported by Times Now, Gautam Gambhir's contract as India's head coach runs until 2027. There is no immediate threat to his job, but the recent results have forced the BCCI to closely review the team's performances in the recent white-ball games.
The BCCI is not only looking at the players' performances but is also checking whether the coaching staff's plans are working properly. The board understands that the team is going through a transition after several big changes. The team has a new captain, a new opening combination, and several young players who are still learning international cricket.
England humiliation triggers big BCCI Review as Gambhir faces heat
The coaching staff believes young players need time to settle. Even though the BCCI understands the rebuilding process, it also wants to see clear improvement. The selectors do not want the transition phase to become a reason for repeated defeats.
They now expect captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Gautam Gambhir to show that the team is moving in the right direction with better performances and strong results.
A top BCCI official revealed, “There are a lot of changes from the XI that played the T20 World Cup final to now. Be it the captain, be it the opening batsman. There is no Hardik Pandya; there is no Jasprit Bumrah. When you go for that reset, it takes a bit of time.
If you see, a 15-year-old [Vaibhav Sooryavanshi] is opening, Prince Yadav is in his second T20I, and Harshit Rana is coming back from an injury. We ultimately look only at results, and no doubt results are important in international cricket, but we have to be practical as well.”
BCCI sends strong warning to Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Tilak Varma
Some players are also under extra pressure after their poor performances on the ongoing England tour. Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are reportedly being closely watched after failing to score big runs. The board is not happy with the way both batters are trying to attack almost every ball instead of building their innings.
They want players to show better game awareness and play according to the match situation, not just attacking every ball. Middle-order batter Tilak Varma is also under the scanner.
The vice-captain has not been able to make a big impact in the series, and reports suggest the selectors are keeping a close watch on his performances. He now need a strong finish to the series to secure his place in the team.
