Karim Janat, on Friday (July 14), nearly fired Afghanistan to a miraculous win against Bangladesh in the first T20I at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet.
Bangladesh, however, held their nerve and went on to win the game by two wickets to take the lead in the two-match series. Asked to bat first, Afghanistan scored 154 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. The hosts were in a spot of bother after being reduced to 52 for 4 and then 87 for 5.
Veteran allrounder Mohammad Nabi then scored a fighting fifty for his team to guide them to a respectable total of 154. The former Afghanistan captain scored an unbeaten 54 off 40 balls with the help of six fours and one six. Azmatullah Omarzai also played a handy cameo of 33 runs off just 18 balls with the help of four sixes to propel Afghanistan to a 150-plus total.

In reply, Bangladesh started their chase poorly. In the 11th over, they found themselves reeling at 64 for 4 with the scalps including the likes of captain Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das. But before Afghanistan could make further inroads, Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain steadied the ship for the hosts and revived the chase.
Karim Janat delivers stunning over:
Hridoy and Shamim all but put the game to bed by sharing a 73-run standoff just 43 balls. When Rashid Khan finally broke the stand by dismissing Shamim, Bangladesh needed only 18 runs off 17 balls. In the end, Bangladesh needed 6 runs off the final over with a well-set Hridoy and allrounder Mehidy Hasan in the middle.
Captain Rashid handed the ball to Karim Janat and the over did not start on a good note. Mehidy hit the first ball for a four to bring down the equation to 2 runs from the last five balls. The match looked all but over before Karim Janat turned it on its head. Out of nowhere, the right-arm seamer dismissed Mehidy, Taskin Ahmed and Nasum Ahmed to take a hat-trick.

In no time the game took an expected turn as the hosts needed two off two with only two wickets left and Hridoy off-strike. Karim Janat, however, failed to defend those two runs as Shoriful Islam held his nerve and hit the first ball he faced for four to seal the game for his team.
