India vs Afghanistan series is set to begin on Sunday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. This is technically the home series for the Afghans, who have borrowed the Indian stadium due to diplomatic tensions in their country. Ahead of the series, former India National Cricket Team opener Wasim Jaffer has warned the Men in Blue over Varun Chakravarthy’s form.

This is a three-match T20I series which comes right after the Afghans played a three-match ODI series and a one-off Test against India. The Men in Blue have lost two of their last three T20I series played under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer; they won 3-0 against Zimbabwe before losing to England and, shockingly, Ireland.

"Varun Chakaravarthy should hopefully do well": Wasim Jaffer concerns over Varun Chakravarthy's form

Wasim Jaffer, while speaking on his YouTube channel, warned Shreyas Iyer over Varun Chakravarthy’s poor form. He believes that the batters have identified how to handle the mystery spinner, as they play aggressive shots against the spinner when the ball is in the slot. Jaffer also believes that it is a crucial series for him.

“Varun Chakaravarthy should hopefully do well because, recently, there have been some difficulties for him. It seems that teams have figured him out a little. The batsmen have figured out how he bowls. Most of his deliveries come into the batsman, and the ball doesn’t go away.”

“When the ball lands in the batsman’s hitting zone, they don’t hesitate to play their shots. They understand that Varun generally looks for the bat-pad gap. So, this will be a very important series for him.”

Varun Chakravarthy's recent form

Varun Chakravarthy did not have the best of times in the T20 World Cup 2026 post the South Africa match. He went for runs and failed to get turn from the pitch. Though he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 14 wickets, most of his scalps came in the group stages, and in the knockout he failed to deliver.

This year, Varun Chakravarthy has picked 19 wickets in 15 matches, with his economy being 9.34. In the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL), he also failed to have much impact, taking 11 wickets across 11 matches; this showcased his poor form this year post the T20 World Cup. He did not feature in the series against Ireland as he was recovering from an injury.

"Afghanistan are dangerous": Wasim Jaffer warns India and Shreyas Iyer

In the same discussion, he also warned the Indian team about the threat that Afghanistan poses in T20 cricket. He believes that they are a dangerous opponent in the shortest format and cannot be taken lightly and feels it will be a tough series for Shreyas Iyer and Co.

“Afghanistan are dangerous in this format. So, overall, I feel India should dominate, but don’t be surprised if Afghanistan beat India in one match and pose a challenge. I don’t think we should take them lightly. I feel this will be a slightly challenging series. India should win the series, otherwise, it would obviously be a very poor performance.”
