The opening match of the Big Bash League (BBL) is all set to be hosted in India; the official announcement has arrived early on the morning of July 14. Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that the first match of BBL 16 will be held at MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Cricket Australia has released the full fixture for the upcoming BBL edition, with the season opener in Chennai, India. It will be the first in the league's history where a match will be arranged outside Australia, in India.
The opening match of BBL 16 will be in Chennai
The 16th edition of the Big Bash League will head towards the conclusion with 44 matches, including the final. In these forty-four games, thirty matches will be in Australia, and one match will be in Chennai, India. The tournament is scheduled to start on Saturday, December 12.
“The season opener at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will be followed by an opening night in Australia featuring the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers at the Gabba three days later.” Cricket Australia confirmed this through their press release on Tuesday.
On December 12 in Chennai, Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will play the first match of the season. As the first match of BBL 16 will be in India, the match will start at 8.10 PM. The aim in arranging a Big Bash League match in India is to gain extended attention from the cricket fans. As cricket is widely popular in India, Cricket Australia wants to gain extra momentum by attracting Indian audiences’ attention through the season opener.
“We're hugely excited by the opportunity to open the season in Chennai,” the head of the league, Alistair Dobson, said in an official statement.
Cricket Australia explains their plans through the Big Bash League
In the official statement, Alistair Dobson mentioned that the upcoming season of the franchise league will mark innovation and evolution. In addition, the sixteenth edition of the league will be played with newly designed rules for batters and fielders, which could add more excitement to the game.
“The Big Bash was built on the spirit of innovation and evolution, and our new designated batter and fielder rule will come into effect this season, giving teams more strategic options and creating new dynamics for fans to enjoy,” Dobson mentioned in his statement.
This year’s Big Bash League also has some other notable points which make it different than the previous seasons. The 44-game season, which will run from December 12 to January 26, will see Marquee matches on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
The knock-out stage remains unchanged
In Australia, the season’s first match will be on December 15 when Brisbane Heat will host Sydney Sixers on December 15.
Cricket Australia keeps the four-game finals format unchanged, with the top four teams to play in the knockout stage, with the Qualifier on Tuesday, January 19. The Final match of the season will be on January 26, which will have a reserve day as a backup plan.
