BCCI impose heavy fine on Mumbai Indians, Ashish Nehra after MI vs GT clash

Mumbai Indians have faced a major setback after losing their IPL 2025 clash to Gujarat Titans by three wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, May 6. Actually, the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians have found themselves breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses for the second time in the ongoing season.
Mumbai Indians suffered a narrow defeat against Gujarat Titans in a rain-hit IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede Stadium. The match, disrupted multiple times due to rain, stretched past midnight and was eventually decided by the DLS method. MI couldn’t defend the 147-run target in 19 overs as GT batters held their nerve and chased down the target with three wickets in hand.
Double trouble for Mumbai Indians after Gujarat Titans game at Wankhede Stadium
After the match, the IPL announced that Hardik Pandya has been fined INR24 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during Match 56 of the ongoing IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans at Wankhede Stadium.
On the other hand, the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player and concussion substitute, have also been fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower.
The IPL said in a media release on May 7: “Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
As it was his team’s second offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Pandya was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player and the concussion substitute, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”
Ashish Nehra penalized for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has also been fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. Nehra admitted to a Level 1 offense under Article 2.20, which relates to behavior against the spirit of the game.
Ashish Nehra’s frustration was hard to miss during the rain-affected IPL 2025 clash between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
Although the official IPL release did not specify the exact nature of his breach, Nehra was visibly agitated throughout the match. Nehra was seen engaging in animated conversations with on-field umpires during the rain breaks.

Ashish Nehra accepted the match referee's sanction
IPL said in a media release: “Ashish Nehra, Head Coach, Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25 percent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the Level 1 offense under Article 2.20—which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game—and accepted the match referee's sanction.”
Notably, for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the match referee's decision is final and binding. After thrashing MI, GT has retained their top position in the IPL 2025 points table.
