BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced prize money for players in domestic cricket as the board continues to take steps to bolster India's domestic arena.

Last year, the BCCI had announced an increase in prize money for the domestic tournaments. The prize money for the Ranji Trophy winners was increased to INR 5 crore from INR 2 crore. On the other hand, the prize money for the runners-up and losing semi-finalists was increased to INR 3 crore and INR 1 crore respectively.

The board had also increased the prize money for the Irani Cup, Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy too. The BCCI had made sure to increase the prize money of women's tournaments as well.

After increasing the prize money of domestic tournaments, the BCCI has now decided to introduce prize money for players too. Jay Shah, on Monday (August 26), announced that the board would introduce prize money for the Player of the Match and the Player of the Tournament in all women's and junior cricket tournaments.

Player of the Match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well as Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy would receive prize money as well.

"We are introducing prize money for the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament in all Women’s and Junior Cricket tournaments under our Domestic Cricket Programme," Jay Shah wrote on X.

"Additionally, prize money will be awarded for the Player of the Match in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournaments for Senior Men."

Initiative to recognize and reward outstanding performances: BCCI secretary Jay Shah

In the same post, Jay Shah also explained the rationale behind the decision. He stated that the prize money would be a big step towards recognizing and rewarding outstanding performances in the domestic circuit. Shah concluded by thanking the BCCI Apex Council for supporting the initiative.

"This initiative aims to recognize and reward outstanding performances in the domestic circuit. A heartfelt thank you to the Apex Council for their unwavering support in this endeavour. Together, we are fostering a more rewarding environment for our cricketers. Jai Hind," wrote Shah.

Meanwhile, Shah is reportedly set to leave BCCI for ICC. As per reports, he is the front-runner to replace Greg Barclay as the next ICC chairman after the latter decided against extending his contract. The deadline to apply for the post is August 27 and Shah is yet to take a final call.

Reports state that Shah is likely to be elected unopposed if he applies for the post. Meanwhile, DDCA president Rohan Jaitley is the favorite to replace Shah as the next BCCI secretary if the latter leaves the board for ICC.
