The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed former pacer Ajit Agarkar as Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee on Tuesday, June 4. As per reports, the board has decided to significantly increase the salary of the chief selector position, nearly tripling it from its previous amount.
Ajit Agarkar replaced Chetan Sharma, who resigned from the post of chief selector after a controversial sting operation. Agarkar was previously associated as an assistant coach with the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). He was released by the franchise a few days ago.

According to a report on Cricbuzz, Ajit Agarkar initially showed reluctance to take up the role of chief selector due to the low salary offered, which was Rs 1 crore. However, the BCCI decided to increase the salary for the chairman’s position to Rs 3 crore per year, prompting Agarkar to reconsider his decision.
The report mentioned that the board has not made a decision regarding the salary increase for the other four selectors, who are currently earning Rs 90 lakh per year. A discussion regarding a potential course correction could take place at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September.
The 45-year-old pacer’s first assignment as the new chairman is to pick the squad for the upcoming five-match T20 series against the West Indies, which is set to be played in the Caribbean and the US. The selection committee consists of Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Sridharan Sharath, and Salil Ankola.

The BCCI issued an official statement regarding Ajit Agarkar’s appointment as the chief selector. The statement mentioned that Agarkar was chosen for the role based on his experience, particularly in Test matches.
“The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape, interviewed applicants for the position of one selector in the Men’s Selection Committee. The three-member CAC has unanimously recommended Mr Ajit Agarkar for the said position.”
“The committee further recommended Mr Agarkar for the role of Chairperson of the Men’s Selection Committee based on seniority (total number of Test matches),” a BCCI statement said.
The newly appointed chief selector had an illustrious cricket career. He represented India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is. He picked up 288 wickets in the 50-over format, making him the third-highest wicket-taker for India in the format.
