Harry Brook has been appointed as the new captain of England’s ODI and T20I teams, taking over from Jos Buttler, who stepped down after the team’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 last month in Pakistan. The England Cricket Board announced Brook’s appointment on April 7.
Brook, known for his explosive batting and cool-headed leadership, has been a key part of England’s white-ball setup since his debut in January 2022. The talented batter, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC Test batting rankings, has also served as the vice-captain in both formats over the past year.

He also led England in the ODI series against Australia last September in Jos Buttler’s absence, where he impressed many with his calm and smart decision-making. Brook also captained the England U-19 side during the 2018 World Cup in New Zealand.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in an official statement, “Yorkshire batter Harry Brook has been appointed as the new captain of the England Men’s white-ball teams.”

It's great deal and real honour for me: Harry Brook
Meanwhile, Brook is proud to take over as England’s new white-ball captain. From dreaming of playing for his country as a young boy to now leading the national team, it’s a special moment for the batter.
Brook was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, “It's a real honor to be named England's white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”
The newly appointed England captain also said that he is grateful for the support from his family and coaches, who have helped him reach this stage. The right-handed batter is now focused on leading England to success and is eager to give his best for the team.
'I'm excited to give it everything I've got'
Brook signed off by saying, “I want to thank my family and coaches who've supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference, and I wouldn't be in this position without them. There's so much talent in this country.
And I'm looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups, and major events. I'm excited to get going and give it everything I've got.”
Notably, Brook has so far played 26 ODIs for England, scoring 816 runs with an average of 34 with the highest score of 110. In T20 Internationals, he has amassed 798 runs in 44 matches, with a top score of an unbeaten 81. He was also part of the England team that won the T20 World Cup in 2022.
