Indian bowlers in recent times has been a force to reckon with in world cricket. Their fast bowling contingent have been taking wickets in India and overseas as well. The Test series against Australia was a prime example of how good the Indian bowlers have become in the modern game. The likes of Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, and Shardul Thakur did the impossible in the absence of the first-choice pacers all of whom were struggling due to injury.

In this article, we take a look at a group of Indian bowlers who have the best average in Test matches with a minimum of 100 wickets.

Mohammed Shami- 27.57

First in this list is Mohammed Shami. He was a part of the Indian Test squad which played the final of the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship. He averages 27.57 with the ball having taken. He has 184 wickets in 57 Tests. In the first edition of the WTC, he took 40 wickets from 11 matches.

Kapil Dev- 29.64

The former Indian skipper Kapil Dev sits second on this elite list of Indian bowlers. He took 434 wickets in 131 Test matches. His record was long-standing till Anil Kumble became the first Indian bowler to get more than 434 Test wickets. Dev took his wickets at an average of 29.64. He and Shami are the only two Indian bowlers with more than 100 Test wickets at an average of under 30.

Javagal Srinath-30.49

The veteran Indian pacer played 67 Tests in his career and ended with 236 wickets. He took these wickets at an average of 30.49. He is the third Indian bowler in this elite list. In a career spanning 12 years, he played a total of 551 international wickets. His last international game for India was the 2003 World Cup final against Australia. These days he is a reputed match referee in international cricket.

Umesh Yadav-30.54

A veteran of 48 Tests for India, Umesh Yadav has taken 148 wickets so far. He also played his part in taking India to the WTC final. He was also in the Indian WTC final though he did not play the final. He took 29 wickets in seven matches in the first edition of the championship.

Ishant Sharma- 32.18

The veteran with 102 Tests to his name went past 300 wickets in the WTC campaign. In his 13-year long career so far, he has taken these wickets at an average of 32.18, the most among the bowlers who feature in this list.

Over the years, Ishant has been troubled by several injuries. However, his longevity is something that has taken the cricketing world take notice of him. He is preparing himself for the five-match Test series against England starting from August 4.
