Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag hinted towards the arrival of India's golden period after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit Sharma's team India defeated Aiden Markram's team South Africa yesterday in what was the Indian team's first T20 WC final since 2014. The Proteas were, in fact, playing in their maiden World Cup final and did not end up the way they had expected. While trying to chase down a total of 176 runs, the Africans lost by 7 runs.

The credits behind this win should not be limited to a single player but it was actually a total team effort. In the 1st innings, it was Virat Kohli who led from the front with the bat after not being able to score in the entire tournament. He had a pivotal role to play in winning the final when the likes of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Suryakumar Yadav lost their wickets.

Virat Kohli stood on to the crease and stitched crucial partnerships first with Axar Patel, who was unfortunate to get run out for 47 runs. The Indians could have scored further if Axar had extended that partnership with Virat. After Patel's dismissal, Kohli then found the support of Shivam Dube.

Virat Kohli and Shivam Dube both stitched a 50+ run partnership before the dismissal of the former for a score of 76 off 59. His strike rate might not have been one of the best but he surely played a key role in chasing down the total. Kohli was replaced by Hardik Pandya, whose boundary and Ravindra Jadeja's 2 runs saw India post a target of 177 for South Africa.

Aiden Markram's side did not have the best of starts as the South African skipper and Reeza Hendricks departed within 2.3 overs. Then Tristan Stubbs and Quinton de Kock took over and scored runs from the front before Stubbs was sent back by Axar Patel looping a full-length delivery.

Then Heinrich Klaasen brought the equation down and South Africa required 30 off 30 at one point. That's when Hardik Pandya stepped up and took Klaasen's wicket with an outside off-stump delivery which took his edge. Arshdeep Singh then scalped de Kock while Jasprit Bumrah got the wicket of Marco Jansen.

In the final over of the 2nd innings, Pandya was once again in action as he took the wicket of David Miller who would have ensured South Africa win the World Cup.

After India's triumph, Virender Sehwag had something positive to say about the Indian team's future.

Virender Sehwag's message to Indian fans

Virender Sehwag took to X (formerly Twitter) and indicated a bright future for the Indian team. He claimed that India have been very consistent in the ICC tournament in the recent past and they finally won it yesterday. Therefore, the winning run is only going to extend and the upcoming years are going to be very fruitful.

"Like in stocks, there is a breakout after consoldation in a range, where after resistance for years there is a multiyear breakout and it reaches new highs, I have a feeling that this is a breakout win for us."

For years, we have played well , been consistent in a range, consolidated but not able to get past the finish line resistance in ICC trophies, yesterday i believe is a 13 year breakout for our team and with this win, I think we would be winning many ICC trophies consistently in the years to come," Sehwag wrote on X.
