The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reportedly approached Chandika Hathurusingha for the position of head coach of the national cricket team. Cricket New South Wales confirmed that Hathurusingha is stepping down as assistant coach.

With the resignation of Russell Domingo, the post of head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team is currently vacant. The BCB will appoint a new coach ahead of the limited-overs series between Bangladesh and England, which includes three one-day internationals (ODIs) and three T20Is.

The BCB president, Nazmul Hasan said on Monday that the new head coach will be appointed between February 18 and 20.

“The coach will come. I don’t if it is Hathuru or someone else, neither has the BCB announced it, but you will see,” Hassan said. “He will definitely be in place before the England series [starting March 1]. I won’t say who it will be. He will be here by February 18-20.”

Domingo resigned as head coach of both Test and One-Day International cricket last month. Former India cricketer Sridharan Sriram served as the technical consultant for last year’s T20 World Cup and is in talks with the BCB about continuing in that role, which the BCB also hopes to retain.

Chandika Hathurusingha served as Bangladesh’s head coach from 2014 to 2017. During his tenure, the side won the ODI series at home against top teams, including series victories over South Africa, Pakistan, and India.

The former Sri Lankan coach left his position as head coach of Bangladesh after the South Africa tour in 2017, reportedly due to disagreements with some senior cricketers. He returned to Sri Lanka as its head coach a few months later.
