Scotland National Cricket Team pacer Charlie Cassell broke the long-held record of South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada in the history of ODI cricket. The former now has the best bowling figures by the bowler in his debut match on the international stage.
Charlie Cassell achieved the feat during the game between Scotland and Oman in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee. He returned with the figures of 7 for 21 in 5.4 overs as he was all over the opposition with his fiery spell of fast bowling.
Charlie Cassell is now over Kagiso Rabada in the list of best bowling figures by a bowler in his ODI debut match. The premier fast bowler held the record since 2015. The Proteas pacer recorded figures of 6 for 16 on his ODI debut against Bangladesh in July 2015 and since then no bowler came even close to him.
Charlie Cassell had a dream start to his international career as he picked two wickets on the first two balls that he bowled. He trapped Zeeshan Maqsood in lbw before bowling Ayaan Khan out to put his team at the top. He then landed another blow for his team on the 4th ball of the over. The fast bowler removed Khalid Kail.
Then in his second over sent Shoaib Khan and Mehran Khan packing to bag a fifer on debut. However, Charlie Cassell didn't stop there as he then removed Pratik Athavale and became only the third bowler after Kagiso Rabada and West Indies' Fidel Edwards to pick six wickets on ODI debut.
Charlie Cassell made sure that he went one step ahead of Kagiso Rabada and Fidel Edwards as he then went to pick the wicket of Bilal Khan and pick his 7th wicket in his maiden international outing. As he removed Bilal by having him caught behind, he helped his team bundle out the opposition for a low total.
Charlie Cassell ended with the figures of 7 for 21 which helped Scotland end Oman's innings for 91 in 21.4 overs. The pacer couldn't have asked for a better outing as at one stage, he had figures of 1.3-1-0-4, which depicts the kind of impact he made right from the start.
Charlie Cassell was named in the Scotland squad as a replacement
Charlie Cassell was named in the Scotland squad as a replacement for the matches against Oman on July 15. He was added to the team in place of fast bowler Chris Sole who was unavailable for personal reasons.
Scotland captain Richie Berrington when presenting Charlie Cassell with his cap before the game against Oman came up with a strong message for the pacer. He made the fast bowler recall what he went through and hailed him for showing great resilience. He stated:
"You've come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible."
