The Cricket Association of Bengal has been left shattered by a huge financial misconduct allegation against CAB officials Debabrata Das and Prabir Chakraborty, as the apex council takes serious action against them to restore faith in the cricketing body, reported India Today.

Cricket is undoubtedly one of the most commercialised sports in India, and every state has its own board supervising the game in that particular state. The Cricket Association of Bengal is one such organisation.

The CAB has had a legacy of producing cricketers like the legendary former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, Wriddhiman Saha, Mohammed Shami, and current players like Abhishek Porel, Akash Deep, and Abhimanyu Easwaran.

Internal Turbulence in the Cricket Association of Bengal

The Cricket Association of Bengal is currently undergoing internal turbulence as two of the board's senior officials, joint secretary Debabrata Das and Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, have both come under the scanner after being accused of financial irregularity and misuse of office powers.

Joint Secretary Debabrata Das is a prominent figure in the Bengal Cricket circuit; however, he has now been issued a show-cause notice by the CAB after being accused of withholding nearly INR 7 lakh in revenue from the association.

He is also accused of retaining money meant for East Bengal and Town Club's tournament participation. As a result of these accusations, CAB has asked Das to clear all these dues within 15 days, while the issue has been addressed in the Apex Council meeting alongside the acceptance of funds in return for the team selections claim still remaining unsolved.

CAB official accused of a Conflict of Interest

The controversy surrounding Das is not new, as he was previously involved in a public spat with former wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha, who had accused him of questioning his commitment to the State Team.

The other simultaneous development alongside Das's controversy has been surrounding CAB Treasurer Prabir Chakraborty, who has been accused of a conflict of interest. A complaint filed by Wari Club was reported to the Apex Council by the Ombudsman, who has turned it back to the Ombudsman for a formal investigation.

He has also been asked to submit a utilization certificate that details the expenditure of the funds. There was another major accusation made against Das of exploiting his powers and the CAB resources, while the Aditya School of Sports had filed a complaint against the CAB Joint Secretary, accusing him of accepting 4 lakh rupees in return for a CAB Club affiliation.

The Bengal players have found a deserving place in the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025, which will mark the beginning of the new domestic cycle for India. The Indian wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan has been named the captain of the side, while Bengal player Abhimanyu Easwaran has been named as his deputy.

Three very well-known names from Bengal, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, and Mohammed Shami, who are all from the Bengal State team, have also been picked into the side. The list also features Suraj Jaiswal and Sudip Kumar Gharami as reserved players for the season.
