Cricket Scotland has appointed Doug Watson as the Interim Head Coach of the Scotland Men’s Squad, following Shane Burger’s exit. Watson, currently Head Coach of Male Performance with the Auckland Aces, agreed to a short-term contract and will take up the reins on April 8 and remain in charge until July 31.

Burger, who was in charge of Scotland during their two recent T20 World Cups, most recently led Scotland to the Cricket World Cup League 2 Championship. Burger has left to take up a position at the English club Somerset. Doug Watson will lead Scotland’s bid to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 World Cup.

I’m Looking Forward To It – Doug Watson

During his tenure, Scotland will compete in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe and the 2024 World T20 Europe Qualifiers in Edinburgh.

“Firstly, I’m really thankful to everyone at Auckland Cricket for allowing me to pursue this opportunity with Cricket Scotland. It’s a wonderful chance for me to coach another country, and Scotland’s Men have been doing really well over the last four years,” said Doug.

“I’m looking forward to carrying on and developing the great work that Shane Burger has put in here. I know Shane well, he’s worked really hard to help get Scotland to where they are, and it was great to see them lift the CWCL2 trophy last week in Nepal.”

“I know it’s obviously a short period of time that I’ll be in charge, but there’s two massive tournaments coming up which will be tough for us, especially the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in June. But it’s also an exciting time as well – I’m looking forward to it and it’s going to be fun.”

Watson has previously held coaching roles with the Mumbai Indians, Wellington, Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, and Namibia, and is currently Auckland’s coach since June 2022. He also stepped in as New Zealand’s batting coach during their recently drawn Test series against England.
