CSA Appoints Rob Walter, Shukri Conrad As New South Africa Coaches

On Monday, January 16, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced the appointments of Rob Walter and Shukri Conrad as the new head coaches of the South Africa National Cricket Team. Both have been signed on four-year contracts.

Walter and Conrad were two of the six candidates interviewed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) a few weeks ago. The remaining four candidates were Durban Super Giants coach Lance Klusener, current interim coach Malibongwe Maketa, former national assistant coach Adrian Birrell and former West Indies director of cricket Richard Pybus.

However, Lance Klusener had decided to withdraw his application to become the new head coach of the Proteas in T20 Internationals (T20Is) and One Day Internationals (ODIs) to focus on T20 franchise roles.

Meanwhile, South Africa National Cricket Team has adopted a split-coaching system this time around. The red-ball coach will be focusing on the Test team and first-class cricket while the white-ball coach will be focusing on the ODIs and T20Is.

Rob Walter and Shukri Conrad Named New White-ball and Red-ball Coach Of South Africa

Cricket South Africa (CSA) took to Twitter to announce that Conrad has been appointed as the new red-ball head coach of the Proteas and Walter has been appointed as the new white-ball head coach. Also, the cricket board has confirmed that the newly appointed duo will be starting their tenure on February 1.

“Shukri Conrad (red-ball) and Rob Walter (white-ball) have been revealed as the new #Proteas head coaches. We wish them all the best in their new roles,” Cricket South Africa (CSA) tweeted on Monday, January 16.

The experienced domestic and Under-19 coach, Conrad, had previously worked as head coach of the Highveld Lions and Cape Cobras during South Africa’s franchise era, winning four trophies with the teams. Also, he is currently coaching the Under-19 team of South Africa.

Meanwhile, Rob Walter worked with the South African team from 2009 to 2013 as a strength and conditioning coach and then he was appointed as the head coach of the Titans. He won three trophies in three seasons while in Pretoria before moving to New Zealand, where he has coached the Otago Volts and Central Stags.

“They are both very clear on how they wish to move South African cricket forward,” said Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s director of cricket, as quoted by Times live.
