Morne Morkel Added To New Zealand Women's Coaching Staff For T20 World Cup 2023

Former South Africa National Cricket Team quick Morne Morkel has been added to the coaching staff of the New Zealand Women’s National Cricket Team for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 will be the eighth edition of the competition. It is scheduled to be held in South Africa from February 10 to 26 and Australia will enter the event as the defending champions.

The 38-year-old Morne Morkel played for the South Africa National Cricket Team between 2006-2018. He represented the Proteas in 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is. He was recently part of the coaching staff of Team Namibia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Morkel will be providing local expertise as well as pace bowling and general coaching support to the White Ferns at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

“The women’s game is growing so rapidly around the world, and this a great opportunity for me to build experience in the women’s game and share my knowledge of international cricket to help this team get better,” Morkel was quoted as saying by Stuff.

The 38-year-old said that he has been following the women’s cricket and the White Ferns closely for a long period of time. He said:

“I’ve been following the women’s game and the White Ferns closely over the last couple of years, especially since moving to Australia and seeing their players who have played in the Women’s Big Bash.

“It’s a talented group of players and they have a very exciting pace bowling attack which I’ll be able to support Ben [Sawyer, the White Ferns’ head coach] with.”

Morne Morkel further expressed his excitement over the prospect of sharing his knowledge with the White Ferns’ World Cup squad. He said:

“[I] have spent a lot of time working here in the past year, so that’s some important knowledge that I’ll be able to share with this group during the tournament.

“Playing in a World Cup is always exciting, so I’m looking forward to sharing that experience with the group and helping them achieve their goals.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting the group when they arrive in South Africa and getting started.”
