Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is succeeding MS Dhoni as the new captain of the franchise, achieved a massive feat last night against the Lucknow Super Giants.

Gaikwad's century in the 1st innings last night helped him get to the record that even Dhoni could not achieve in his 16 seasons as the captain of the franchise, which is aiming to win its 6th IPL title this season. But despite Gaikwad's century, CSK weren't able to win their game against the LSG.

The South Indian outfit was looking to go as high as the 2nd spot in the IPL table with a win last night but despite their best efforts, the Super Giants splashed water on their expectations.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and his side were left stunned by the way LSG chased down the target of 211 within 19.3 overs, thanks to Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis' sensational 124 off 63 balls.

Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda also contributed with their quick knocks of 35 and 17 at strike rates of over 220.

Ruturaj Gaikwad becomes the first-ever CSK captain to score a Century

Over the years, MS Dhoni has been the only one who has captained the Chennai Super Kings consistently across all seasons that they have participated in. The likes of Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja have also captained CSK in different timelines but Dhoni is the one that the team management keeps falling back to.

However, neither of those 3 previous captains was able to score a century as the leader but Ruturaj Gaikwad did it, in only his 8th IPL game as full-time captain.

After losing the toss and batting first, the Super Kings were able to post 211 as the target, en route Ruturaj Gaikwad's 108* off 60 and Shivam Dube's charging 60+ score.

At first, it didn't seem that CSK would be able to get past 200 as Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell left the crease during the powerplay overs for 1 and 11 each.

Then all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja played out an extremely slow inning before throwing his wicket to Mohsin Khan for 16 off 19. Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad had a huge task in hand and the duo ensured that CSK was at least putting 200 on the board.

They stood for a 104-run partnership for the 4th wicket before Dube got run out in the 4th ball of the 20th over after a knock of 66 off 27.

He was replaced by MS Dhoni, who made the most out of the only one ball that he faced by scoring a 4 which led CSK to a score of 210.

Gaikwad topples Faf du Plessis on another list

With his 108* last night, Ruturaj Gaikwad also toppled former opener Faf du Plessis in terms of CSK batters with the most 50+ scores in the Indian Premier League. du Plessis left for RCB with 16 fifty+ scores whereas Gaikwad scored his 17th fifty+ against LSG.

He also moved to second in the Orange Cap table and the only thing he could not do was help his side claim their 5th victory of the season. Chennai will now welcome Hyderabad in their next league-stage match at home.
