West Indies National Cricket Team head coach Daren Sammy has clarified that Jason Holder has not retired from ODI cricket, correcting an earlier statement that suggested the all-rounder had called time on his 50-over career.
Speaking after his interview with Wisden, Daren Sammy admitted he had used the wrong wording and explained that Jason Holder is instead on an indefinite break from ODI cricket.
"I know he’s retired from ODI cricket"- Daren Sammy's old remarks on Jason Holder
Earlier, while speaking to Wisden, Daren Sammy said that Jason Holder remained in contention for the West Indies Test team but has retired from ODI cricket. Sammy acknowledged that Holder's commitments in franchise leagues made his availability a key discussion point, but revealed that the all-rounder had expressed a clear desire to continue playing Test cricket.
“Jason is still in the mix for Tests. I know he’s retired from ODI cricket,” Sammy had said. “He has spoken about his interest, but obviously you know he’s a franchise player as well. So, it’s us talking about ... availability, where he fits. But yeah, he’s made it clear that he's still interested in Test cricket.”
Daren Sammy rectifies his words about Jason Holder
Although Daren Sammy stated in a podcast that Jason Holder has retired from ODI cricket, there was no official confirmation from the all-rounder himself.
Now Sammy has clarified that Holder has not retired from the 50-over format, and his choice of words was wrong, and the all-rounder is just on an indefinite break from ODI cricket.
“In responding to a question about Jason’s international future outside of T20 cricket, I mistakenly referred to him as having retired from ODI cricket. That was an incorrect choice of words on my part, and I sincerely apologise to Jason, Cricket West Indies, and our fans for the confusion it has caused.”
“The correct position is that Jason has taken an indefinite break from ODI cricket. He has not retired from the format, and he remains very much in the mix for West Indies selection. Jason continues to be an important part of our player pool, and Cricket West Indies remains in regular dialogue with him regarding his availability across all formats of the international game.”
“Once again, I regret the error and appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight.”
Jason Holder's ODI career and recent form
Holder has featured in 138 matches, scoring 2,237 runs and taking 159 wickets. He last played an ODI in July 2023 against Scotland, which was the ICC World Cup Qualifier, where Scotland stunned West Indies, winning the match by 7 wickets.
The 34-year-old has been in good form in the T20I format. In 2025, Holder picked 97 wickets in all T20s, breaking the record for most wickets in the format in a calendar year.
Thus, he was picked by the IPL team Gujarat Titans (GT) during the 2026 mini-auction for INR 7 crore, and he performed well for the franchise. He had the best IPL season with the ball, picking 17 wickets for the Titans with an economy of 7.56 as he consistently bowled well in the middle overs.
