Deepti Sharma officially becomes No.1 bowler in Women's T20I

Deepti Sharma was the brightest star in the India vs Pakistan 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup match at Edgbaston in Birmingham on June 14. Sharma’s spin bowling never allowed the arch rivals to get settled on the track while chasing the target.

In the 4-over spell, Deepti Sharma claimed 5 wickets for only 10 runs. With the stunning 5/10 bowling figure, the Indian all-rounder has captured a record as well. She is officially now the No.1 bowler in the Women’s T20I format in terms of taking most wickets.

According to ESPNCricinfo, Deepti now has 166 wickets in the shortest format. She claimed the number one spot, surpassing Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong, who has 165 wickets.

Record-breaking bowling figure of Deepti

There is another record that the spinner has added to her list. Deepti is among the rare bowlers who took 5 wickets for the Indian Women’s cricket team in the history of the T20 World Cup. Before Deepti Sharma, Renuka Thakur, and Priyanka Roy are the other two cricketers who hold similar achievements.

The Edgbaston pitch was suitable for the spinners. In the second innings of the match, when India was the bowling side, after securing 170 runs in the first innings. At the presentation ceremony, Deepti mentioned that she got help from the soil.

She mentioned that the ball was turning on the track, so she tried only to control the speed of the ball in the air. The combination of slow pace and turn helped Deepti to take 5 wickets and India to win the match by 64 runs.

“I am very grateful. I like this kind of wickets… I think because it's turning, so I varied my pace in every ball and every over. That helped me a lot. Yeah, because it's turning, so I just have to believe that I have to bowl a little bit slower in the air and just believe in myself and bowl in the right areas. That's what I was doing, yeah,” she said after the match.

During the spell, Deepti Sharma clinched the wickets of Gull Feroza, Ayesha Zafar, Aliya Riaz, Nashra Sundhu, and Tasmia Rubab. Against the spin attack, the Pakistan Women’s cricket team was dismissed for only 106 runs in 17 overs. Shree Charani and Shafali Varma, the other two spinners, bagged 3 and one wicket each, respectively.

The Indian Women’s Team’s next match in the ongoing T20 World Cup will be on June 17, against the Netherlands at Headingley Carnegie in Leeds.
