The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council have taken strong action after the fiery exchange between Lucknow Super Giants’ Digvesh Rathi and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma took center stage during the IPL 2025 clash in Lucknow.
Digvesh Rathi has been fined 50% of his match fee and handed a one-match suspension for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Ekana Stadium on Monday (May 20).
Digvesh Rathi gets one-match suspansion after Lucknow drama
This was the LSG spinner’s third Level 1 offense this season, pushing his total to five demerit points, which automatically bans him for one match. As a result, Rathi will miss LSG’s next game against Gujarat Titans on May 22 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Earlier this season, Digvesh Rathi had already received three demerit points for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct against Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. The IPL stated in a media release, “Digvesh Rathi has been fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during LSG’s match against SRH in Lucknow on Monday.”
The release further reads, “This was his third Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 this season, and hence, he has accumulated two demerit points, in addition to the three demerit points he had accumulated earlier—one demerit point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025, and two demerit points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. As he now has five demerit points this season—which result in a one-game suspension—Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG’s next game against Gujarat Titans.”

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma has also been fined 25% of his match fee for his role in the on-field drama with Rathi. This was his first offense, so he was handed one demerit point. As per IPL rules, the match referee’s decision is final and binding for Level 1 offenses.
The IPL media release states, “Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the LSG vs. SRH match in Lucknow. This was his first Level 1 offense under Article 2.6 this season, and hence, he has accumulated one demerit point.”
The recap of fiery exchange between Digvesh Rathi and Abhishek Sharma
Meanwhile, the IPL 2025 clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad turned fiery as Digvesh Rathi and Abhishek Sharma were involved in a heated exchange at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday. Their fight overshadowed LSG’s elimination from the IPL 2025 playoffs.
It all started when Abhishek was dismissed by Rathi and celebrated with his trademark “notebook” move and waved goodbye at the SRH opener. The gesture left Abhishek furious, leading to a heated exchange between the two young bloods.
The situation forced the on-field umpire to intervene and separate Rathi and Sharma, but the drama didn’t end there. During the post-match handshake, Abhishek confronted LSG coach Vijay Dahiya and had another face-off with Rathi. Dahiya eventually separated them. Later, the BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla spoke to both players to calm things down.
