ENG vs AUS: Sunil Gavaskar Blasts Bazball After England Go 0-2 Down In Ashes 2023, Says 'Test Cricket Is After All Test Cricket'

Former India opener and active commentator Sunil Gavaskar slammed England’s Bazball in his latest column for an Indian daily newspaper. The former Indian skipper said Bazball worked against lesser-quality bowling and was useless against a mighty Australian side in Ashes 2023.
England have relied on Bazball in Test cricket. It’s an aggressive style of play in red-ball format, adopted after Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took the roles of captain and coach respectively. England also won some series by adopting a T20 style of batting in some Test series during the last two years.

Test Cricket Is, After All, Test Cricket: Sunil Gavaskar
In his column for Mid-Day newspaper, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar bashed England’s Bazball. Gavaskar said that the style is useless against a top-class side like Australia.
“As for Bazball, forget it. It happened against lesser-quality bowling, but against a top-class Australian attack it’s back to good old grinding batting and not T20 shots. Test cricket is, after all, Test cricket,” Gavaskar wrote in his column.

Gavaskar also said that Bazball surprised the Australian team at the start but they were confident that this approach wouldn’t last long in upcoming matches.
“While the Australian attack was certainly taken by surprise at the approach of the England batters in the first Test match, they quickly regathered themselves and realized that this Bazball approach couldn’t succeed against their attack consistently,” Gavaskar further said.
“They also learned that bowling short to the English batters was going to get them wickets rather than the pitched-up deliveries which the batters were prepared for. Suddenly, with having to play the ball around their ribcage and helmets, the English batsmen found they couldn’t quite cope with it and so Australia went two up without too much trouble,” said Gavaskar, who was the first batsman to smash 10000 international runs.
Australia lead Ashes 2023 series 2-0 after two games. Australia won the 1st Test by 2 wickets and the 2nd Test by 43 runs. The result of the 3rd Test is yet to be determined. England seek to chase down a 251-run target in the 3rd Test to make a comeback in the series.
