England and Australia were up against each other in the rain-effected third ODI on Tuesday, September 24, at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street in Durham. England crushed their old foes Australia by 46 runs via the DLS method to keep their hopes alive in the ongoing five-match ODI series.

Earlier, the Australia cricket team had won the first two ODIs on their England tour and took a lead in the ongoing series. The England cricket team kept their hopes alive in the ongoing ODI series 1-2 by winning the third ODI with the two games to go on September 27 and 29, respectively.

England keeps ODI series alive with a rain-affected win, ends Australia's 14-game winning streak

Well, England finally broke their losing streak against Australia, securing their first ODI victory after suffering seven consecutive defeats to their arch-rivals in the format. Before this poor run, England had dominated the head-to-head battles, winning 12 out of the 15 ODI encounters against Australia.

England’s comeback win meant that Australia’s iconic 14-match winning streak in ODI cricket was ended on Tuesday. Australia recorded the most consecutive wins between January 2003 and May 2003 when they won 21 back-to-back matches in ODI cricket.

Their second-best winning streak began with their ODI World Cup 2023 triumph in India. Australians were unbeaten since October 2023, winning 14 consecutive ODIs, but it was England who finally handed them their first shocker at the Riverside Ground for the first time in 348 days.

Australia’s last defeat in the ODIs came during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Lucknow, where they were beaten by South Africa. Notably, during this match, Harry Brook became the fourth England captain to hit a century against Australia in his debut ODI series as the skipper.

England vs Australia third ODI match highlights

Speaking about the third ODI, this win was crucial for England to boost their confidence for the rest of the ODI series against Australia. The toss played a big role, with the pitch offering extra bounce and movement due to the previous day's rain.

This made it tough for Australia’s batters, who had to take a cautious approach. However, Australia's lower-middle order shined with Steve Smith (60), Cameron Green (42), and Alex Carey (77*) scoring crucial ruins for the tourists as the pitch eased under the lights.

Later, Aarin Hardie played a stunning knock of 44 runs off 26 balls to help Australia post fighting 304/7 on the board against England. Chasing 305 runs to save the ODI series, England had a miserable start, losing both openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett for just 2 and 8 runs inside 3 overs.

However, Will Jacks’ 84 and captain Brook’s 110* were enough for England to secure a thrilling 46-run win over Australia via the DLS method, as the return of heavy rain didn’t allow the players to resume the play at the Riverside Ground.

We failed to break Jack and Brook's partnership and it costs us the game: Mitch Marsh

Australian captain Mitch Marsh said on the loss: “Thought we did extremely well to get to 300. Carey and Hardie were outstanding towards the end. I thought 250 was par after the start; we certainly were in the game at the halfway mark. They obviously got a good partnership going, and fair play to them; we will try to win the series in London. Anytime we miss him (Adam Zampa), it is going to be hard work, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the coming games.”
