Former batsman Kevin Pietersen has said England are ahead of India in the ongoing second Test in Vishakhapatnam despite the hosts scoring more than 300 runs on day one. Riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s unbeaten knock of 179 runs, Team India finished the first day of the Test on 336 for 6. While most of India’s top and middle-order batsmen failed to deliver, Jaiswal stood firm at one end and scored his first Test century at home to lead the team’s charge with the bat. He smashed 17 fours and 5 sixes in his memorable knock.

Apart from Jaiswal, no other Indian batsman could reach the 50-run mark. Shubman Gill was the second-highest run-scorer after scoring 34 while debutant Rajat Patidar (32) was the only other player who reached the 30-run mark. The likes of Rohit Sharma (14), Shreyas Iyer (27), Axar Patel (27) and KS Bharat (17) failed to score big.

Kevin Pietersen on India’s situation:

While many believe that India is in the driver’s seat in the game after scoring 336 runs on day one, Kevin Pietersen believes otherwise. Speaking on Jio Cinema, the former England captain said that England is ahead in the match due to India’s approach in the game.

“One thing we know about England is when they come out to bat, they are going to attack, score quickly, and score positively. They are not going to come in and bat the way India have batted today,” said Kevin Pietersen.

“I think that has put England ahead in the game. I say that because there wasn’t any gremlin on the pitch on Day 1. The bounce was even and there wasn’t any crazy spin to make me feel that India should be more than 3 or 4 down,” he added.

At the time of writing this report, India was on 364 for 7 after 101 overs with Jaiswal unbeaten on 201. Team India will be hoping that the youngster continues to bat and stitch useful stands with the lower-order players to propel India to a mammoth total.

India are eyeing a series-leveling win after losing the first Test last week. The Rohit Sharma-led side ended up on the losing side despite taking a huge lead of 190 runs in the first innings.
