The R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo hosted the second ODI of the three-match series between the Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Charith Asalanka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team on Sunday, August 4.
The Rohit Sharma-led team lost the match by 32 runs to go down 0-1 in the ODI series. The defeat came as a major shock for the Indian team, who were hot favorites to whitewash the home team.
After a tied game in the first ODI, India started off things pretty well in the second game as they picked up a wicket on the first ball after being invited to bowl first. However, Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis didn't let their side feel the pressure as they batted brilliantly and played confident cricket.
After the dismissal of top-order batters, the middle and lower order of the team took responsibility and after grinding hard, they managed to score 240 for 9. For India, Washington Sundar got three wickets and Kuldeep Yadav got two wickets. Also, Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel got one wicket each.
Chasing the target, Rohit Sharma as usual batted with total aggression and demolished the opposition bowling attack. He smashed 64 runs and left his team in a strong position when he walked back to the hut.
After the dismissal of the Indian captain, only Axar Patel managed to play a good knock and all the other batters failed miserably. India were eventually bundled out for 208 and lost the match.
When you lose a game, everything hurts - Rohit Sharma
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit Sharma said that he was disappointed and hurt after the loss. He also lauded Jeffrey Vandersay for his stupendous spell in the match. Rohit Sharma said:
"When you lose a game, everything hurts. It's not just about those 10 overs. You have to play consistent cricket and we failed to do that today. Little disappointed but these things happen. You got to adapt what's in front of you. With left-right, we felt it'll be easier to rotate strike. Credit to Jeffrey, he got six wickets."
When asked whether he was unsatisfied with his own batting performance, Rohit Sharma rejected that idea and said that he would continue batting with the same intent.
"The reason I got 65 is because of the way I batted. When I am batting like that, there's a lot of risks taken. If you don't cross the line, you always feel disappointed. I don't want to compromise on my intent."
Rohit Sharma further said that they weren't good enough in the match and Sri Lanka played better cricket. Rohit Sharma said:
"We understand nature of this surface, it gets really tough in the middle overs. You have to try to get as many as possible in the powerplay. We weren't good enough. Don't want to look too much into how we played. But there'll be talks about our batting in the middle overs."
