Legendary New Zealand cricketer Daniel Vettori said it’s surprising to see premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dropped from the Indian Test team in the overseas games and Ravindra Jadeja getting preference over him.
Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the purest format of the game. In the Green Park, Kanpur Test against New Zealand, he dismissed Tom Latham in 55th over to pick his 418 Test wicket and with that, Ashwin went past Harbhajan Singh’s Test tally of 417.
Now, Ashwin is just next to legendary Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev, and he needs only 16 wickets to surpass Kapil Dev.
Ravichandran Ashwin Is So Reliable Particularly In Home Conditions – Daniel Vettori
Former New Zealand spinner Vettori said that Ashwin has been dominant and reliable in the Indian conditions, and he keeps evolving, trying to get better. Vettori on ESPNCricinfo asserted:
“I think for someone who has been so dominant in so many different scenarios for India. He is so reliable, particularly in home conditions. The pace at which he takes wickets is phenomenal. The way he has evolved… his variations… the bowler that he was to the bowler that he has become. He is always learning, always trying to get better.”
Vettori also said that Ashwin is one of the best spinners in world cricket and a “consistent match-winner” and was fascinated to see India preferring Jadeja over him in overseas conditions. Notably, India dropped Ashwin from the Playing XI in the recent England tour, and Jadeja played as the sole spinner in the team.
“All this while he is one of the best spinners for India and in world cricket, he regularly gets dropped. It is fascinating to sit back and see a guy who averages over five wickets in a Test and is a consistent match-winner gets left out of the team, and how Jadeja gets preferred over him. But he keeps coming back. He is far from done,” said Vettori.
