Australian opener David Warner had been watching Test cricket keenly when it returned on Wednesday as England and New Zealand locked horns at the Lord’s. Aside from the likes of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor in action, England’s Stuart Broad and James Anderson did their customary duties of sharing the new ball. But David Warner underwent loss of sleep every time Stuart Broad came into bowl, drawing references to the 2019 Ashes.

While the 2019 Ashes is well known for Steve Smith’s unparalleled performances with the bat on his return to Test cricket, it was the opposite for David Warner. Instead, the southpaw fell to Stuart Broad seven times in the series as he aggregated only 95 runs in ten innings, passing 11 only once. Nevertheless, Australia, largely thanks to Smith’s heroics retained the Ashes, doing so for the first time since 2001 in England as the five-match series ended in 2-2.

David Warner took to his official Twitter handle and wrote sarcastically that as he tried to get some sleep, Stuart Broad keeps popping up on his tv screen. The New South Wales batsman underlined there is still a few months to try and get some good rest before the Englishmen arrive in Australia for the Ashes. England have not won the Ashes in Australia since their 2010-11 tour and suffered margins of 5-0 and 4-0 defeat in their last two visits.

Meanwhile, Stuart Broad has made a sedate start to his English summer as he bowled economically but without wickets on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand at the Lord’s. The veteran was the most economical bowler at stumps on day one, finishing with figures of 20-5-42-0. Devon Conway’s unbeaten hundred guided New Zealand to a strong position of 246-3.
