Fielding Team To Suffer In T20Is For Slow Over-Rate As The ICC Announces New Playing Conditions

On Friday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the new playing conditions for the T20 International cricket.

In men’s and women’s T20 Internationals the in-match penalty for slow over rates will come into effect this month. Also, the new playing conditions will provide an optional drinks interval midway through the innings in the bilateral T20 international series.

According to the new rules if a fielding team fails to complete the overs in the scheduled time one fewer fielder will be permitted outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings of the T20I match.

“The over rate regulations are captured in clause 13.8 of the playing conditions, which stipulate that a fielding side must be in a position to bowl the first ball of the final over of the innings by the scheduled or rescheduled time for the end of the innings. If they are not in such a position, one fewer fielder will be permitted outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings,” the ICC stated.

In the official statement released by the International Cricket Council, it was revealed that the change was recommended by the ICC cricket committee after the effectiveness of similar regulation in the new format of cricket; the Hundred competition which was recently introduced by England and Wales cricket board.

“The change was recommended by the ICC Cricket Committee, which regularly discusses ways to improve the pace of play in all formats, after considering reports on the effectiveness of a similar regulation that was included in the playing conditions for the Hundred competition conducted by the ECB,” the ICC media release added.

In Another Change, An Optional Drinks Break Of Two Minutes And Thirty Seconds May Be Taken – ICC

The second change made by the International Cricket Council was regarding the optional drinks break midway through each T20I innings.

“In another change, an optional drinks break of two minutes and thirty seconds may be taken at the mid-point of each innings subject to agreement between Members at the start of each series,” ICC Official Statement.

Meanwhile, the first-ever men’s T20I game to be played after the introduction of new playing conditions will be between West Indies and Ireland at Sabina Park in Jamaica on 16 January 2022.

Also, the first women’s match to be played under the new playing conditions will be between South Africa and West Indies at SuperSport Park, Centurion on January 18.
