Veteran New Zealand batter Martin Guptill came up with a hilarious story on the anniversary of India's disappointing defeat to the Kiwis in the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019. He mocked MS Dhoni for the run-out and revealed that he is getting a lot of hate.
10th July marks the 5th anniversary of India's crushing defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019. The Men in Blue, who played a sensational brand of cricket throughout the tournament, failed to tackle the Kiwi challenge and were eliminated.
The game also marked the last game for MS Dhoni in the Indian colors. The keeper-batter gave his best for the team in the semi-final and almost pulled the game back for his team but couldn't finish the match as the brilliance of Martin Guptill took the Kiwis to the final of the tournament.
Chasing the target of 240 runs, India was left tottering and lost 5 quick wickets. But it was Ravindra Jadeja, who along with MS Dhoni steadied the innings and brought the team back in the game. The duo soaked in all the pressure and was taking the game deep.
Dhoni and Jadeja shared 116 runs partnership before the all-rounder perished and it was all left to the keeper-batter. The game went down the wire and Dhoni even hit Lockie Ferguson for a big six that reduced the equation to 25 off 10 balls and it seemed he would yet again take his team home.
But on the very next ball, it was a big heartbreak for all the fans. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson bowled a short ball, which rushed MS Dhoni and he flapped it away behind square. The ball landed in no man's land and the keeper-batter seized in the opportunity to take the second run.
However, Martin Guptill, who was stationed at fine leg, sprinted in, picked up the ball, and effected the direct hit from a long distance. MS Dhoni was caught inches short of the crease when the ball castled down the stumps and it ended the Indian hopes.

Following that MS Dhoni didn't play a single game in the Indian colours and then on 15th August 2020, he called time on his career. The keeper-batter is still playing in the Indian Premier League and there are high chances that the 2024 edition of the league was his last with bat and gloves. He also handed leadership of Chennai Super Kings to Ruturaj Gaikwad.
