Legendary Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower, who is considered one of the shrewdest minds in world cricket, has said that having specialist players and coaches is important for the teams like India, Australia, and England that play a lot of cricket in a calendar year.

Among the big 3 of world cricket – England, India, and Australia – only England National Cricket Team have two head coaches in the setup. Brendon McCullum is the Test team’s head coach and Matthew Mott is the head coach of the white-ball team. Talking about captains, Australia and England follow the split captaincy while India have Rohit Sharma as the all-format skipper.

Meanwhile, Andy Flower said that specialists are not needed for the countries that don’t play a lot of cricket.

“For some countries, it is not needed. For bigger countries who are playing tons of cricket, players specialising makes sense. It would also make sense from a coaching point of view and a lifestyle and health point of view.

“Being on the road, living in hotels for two or three quarters in a year, that is not a healthy thing for families and relationships,” the former Zimbabwe captain said on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi T10 League.

The biggest catalyst of change was Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss – Andy Flower

England, under the leadership of Jos Buttler, recently won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 to become the first-ever team to hold the 50-over World Cup title and 20-over World Cup title at the same time. Notably, the Eoin Morgan-led England won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2019.

Meanwhile, Andy Flower said that Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss are responsible for the success of England cricket in the past few years.

“The biggest catalyst of change was Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss. They encouraged an uber attacking style of play and they had freedom to do this as they had a poor World Cup in 2015,” said the 54-year-old.

Andy Flower also showered praise on the Indian vice-captain KL Rahul, who is the captain of Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.

“I don’t agree with you that he has not been able to deliver. He has proved time and time again that he is able to deliver. He is an amazing cricketer and so beautiful to watch but also he has got an amazing record, especially in the IPL, and a ridiculously good average. I rate him very highly,” he said.
