Former India Cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu Handed One-year Jail Term By SC In A Road Rage Case

The Supreme Court has handed former India National Cricket Team player Navjot Singh Sidhu a one-year jail term over a 1988 road rage case.

On December 27, 1988, the incident involving Navjot Singh Sidhu took place in the north Indian city of Patiala in Punjab when Sidhu pulled 65-year-old Gurnam Singh out of his vehicle and allegedly hit him on his head, which led to Gurnam’s death.

Meanwhile, in 2018 Navjot Singh Sidhu was found guilty in the case of willingly hurting an individual and he was handed an INR 1000 fine and was released.

Earlier, in 2006 Sidhu was handed a three-year prison sentence after the victim’s family had then challenged the verdict and moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. However, now in 2022 Sidhu’s punishment has been reduced to 1 year.

On Thursday, the judgment was passed by the two-judge bench comprising Justices A. M. Khanwilkar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul. Notably, the same two-judge bench had reduced Sidhu’s sentence from three years’ imprisonment to an INR 1000 fine in 2018.

“We have allowed review application on the issue of sentence,” the court said on Friday, according to legal media website livelaw. in. “In addition to the fine imposed, we impose a sentence of imprisonment of one year to be undergone by respondent 1(Sidhu).”

Meanwhile, Navjot Singh Sidhu made his debut for India National Cricket Team in 1983 and he played till 1999 for the side. He represented India in 51 Tests and scored 3202 runs, including 9 centuries and 15 half-centuries.

Also, he played 136 One Day Internationals for India in which he scored 4413 runs at an average of 37.08, including 6 centuries and 33 half-centuries.
