Former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns has had longstanding health problems in the recent past. He was discharged from a hospital in Canberra following a heart attack and now he has been diagnosed once again with cancer. The former Kiwi international cricketer took to his Instagram handle to share the news.
Cairns has been diagnosed with bowel cancer five months after he underwent a life-saving heart operation and was then paralysed by a subsequent stroke.
“I was told yesterday I have bowel cancer…big shock and not what I was expecting after what was supposed to be a routine checkup. So, as I prepare for another round of conversations with surgeons and specialists, I keep remembering how lucky I am to be here in the first place…and how blessed I am to have all that I do in my life. Wasn’t all bad this week either, managed to get in some kids sport and celebrate Noah’s birthday at home. Another fight ahead but here’s hoping this one is a swift upper cut and over in the first round” he wrote on Instagram.

Chris Cairns played 62 Tests for New Zealand between 1989 and 2004, averaging 29.4 with the ball and 33.53 with the bat. He hit 87 sixes, a Test world record at the time, and was the sixth player to achieve the all-rounders’ double of 200 wickets and 3,000 runs.
The all-rounder played 215 ODIs for the Kiwis scoring 4950 at an average of 29.46. He also took 201 wickets in the format. He retired from international cricket back in 2004.
Cairns was a celebrated Kiwi cricket but his career was tarnished with match-fixing scandals and controversies. The probes resulted in two court cases which almost ended his reputation as a cricketer.
