Mumbai Indians finished last in IPL 2024. Under Hardik Pandya, their new captain, they won four games and lost as many as 10 matches. The five-time IPL champions decided to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain before the season started.
There was a lot of talk about how the team performed under Hardik. He was criticized by the Mumbai Indians fans and the Indian fans as well. The management however entrusted him to deliver the goods which he could not in his first year as captain of the franchise.
He made a strong comeback in the T20 World Cup with 144 runs and 11 wickets and was also the vice-captain of the side. It will be interesting to see how he does in his second year as the team's skipper.
In the meeting between the IPL owners and the BCCI, several important pointers were discussed. Number of retentions was one of them.
SRH and KKR were in favor of at least 7-8 retentions as they felt that franchises would be able to retain a big core of the side by doing that. There were not many inputs on the same from other franchises.
Several franchises have stood against mega auctions as well as they feel it derails the investment the franchises make on their players and lose the brand value of the teams and players as well.
KKR and SRH were among the two franchises who strongly opposed the mega auctions but were in favor of mini auctions every tear before IPL editions. Meanwhile, in this article, we pick three overseas players Mumbai Indians might release ahead of IPL 2025.
Overseas Players Mumbai Indians (MI) Will Release Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Mohammad Nabi
By the time, the next IPL season starts, Nabi will turn 40. He is a part of Afganstan's white-ball side as well playing international cricket but playing in the IPL takes a lot out of a player.
Plus the tournament maintains the best fitness standards and thus the team might want younger and fitter players who are available throughout the year. He played seven matches for the franchise last season picking up just two wickets and scoring 35 runs.
Luke Wood
The England pacer was roped in by Mumbai Indians as a replacement for the injured Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff. Wood picked up just one wicket in the two games that he played for the franchise.
He was roped in almost as a like-for-like replacement for the Australian pacer but unfortunately did not get to play too many games.
Dilshan Madushanka
The Lankan pacer was roped in by Mumbai Indians for 4.6 crores. He was unfortunately ruled out of the season with a hamstring injury and was replaced by South African pacer Kwena Maphaka who himself played just a handful of games as well.
The Sri Lankan pacer recently picked up an injury as well and was ruled out of the T20I and ODI series against India. He has been injury-prone for a large part of his rather brief career which is why the management might look beyond him with the mega auctions coming up.
