Gary Kirsten, Luke Ronchi to consult family & friends before taking Pakistan head coach role - Reports

Former South Africa player Gary Kirsten or former New Zealand wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi might take charge of the Pakistan team as their new head coach. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered the role of head coach to both of them.

Luke Ronchi is the current batting coach of the New Zealand team. Earlier, he rejected the role of head coach last year and Grant Bradburn accepted the position. Pakistan team is going to clash with New Zealand in a T20I series at home next month.

Pakistan will take on New Zealand in five T20I games in a home series. The opening T20I game will take place on April 18 in Rawalpindi. Pakistani players are also busy with a training camp in Kabul for the forthcoming series.

Gary Kirsten and Luke Ronchi are yet to take the final call

According to reports by Cricketpakistan.com, Gary Kirsten and Luke Ronchi are yet to take a final call about the offer. They have asked for some time to consult with their families and friends. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to finalize the decision within the next week.

Grant Bradburn was the previous coach of Pakistan who stepped down from the post after the ICC ODI World Cup last year. Interestingly, PCB has turned to Luke Ronchi and Gary Kirsten after facing rejection by three players.

Shane Watson, Mike Hesson, and Daren Sammy rejected offers

Earlier, Shane Watson, Mike Hesson, and Daren Sammy were contacted by PCB for the Pakistan head coach role. However, all of them have refused to take up the role. Gary Kirsten is currently busy in IPL 2024. He is the mentor of the Gujarat Titans franchise.

Notably, PCB needs to fill up the post of head coach as soon as possible to prepare the team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament will be played in June there are just two months left to prepare for the ICC event.

Pakistan lost to New Zealand 4-1 in January

Pakistan team faced a miserable defeat against New Zealand in their previous series. They toured New Zealand in January for five T20I games. Led by new T20I skipper Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan lost the first four games to register a 4-1 defeat. They managed to win only the final game.

Post the New Zealand tour, Pakistani players were busy with the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2024). Shadab Khan-led Islamabad United won the title by defeating Multan Sultans in the final by 2 wickets.
