Gary Stead admitted that his future with New Zealand is out of his hands following the team's disappointing performances in the World Cup 2024.

New Zealand started their ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a loss against Afghanistan. The Kane Williamson-led team went on to lose against the West Indies in their second match. The Black Caps are currently at the bottom of the Group C points table with zero victories and a net run rate (NRR) of -2.425.

We Tried To Put In Place Has Been As Good As Possible - Gary Stead

When asked about his future as head coach, Gary Stead said that it’s up to others to decide. Stead expressed confidence in the team's preparation efforts, stating that they had tried to put in place the best possible preparation.

"That's a question you should be asking other people. I can look at myself in the mirror and know that the preparation we tried to put in place has been as good as (possible)," Stead told Radio New Zealand ahead of Afghanistan's win over Papua New Guinea.

Gary Stead has been the head coach of the Black Caps since 2018, with one year remaining on his contract. Under his leadership, the New Zealand cricket team reached the 2021 T20 World Cup final and made it to the semi-finals in both the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

We Put The Effort In That We're Proud Of - Gary Stead

Gary Stead emphasized the importance of pride in representing their country and giving their best effort despite being eliminated from the ongoing World Cup. The 52-year-old acknowledged the support of their fans who continue to back the Black Caps.

"Whilst it may seem that we're out of it there is still that pride of playing for your country and making sure that we put the effort in that we're proud of as well," Stead further stated.

"You can't control everything in a cricket game but the things we can control are about the style we're trying to play. We have a number of fans that are still rooting for the Black Caps and the way that they play their cricket."

New Zealand has two group games remaining in the T20 World Cup against Uganda and Papua New Guinea. The Kane Williamson-led team will take on Uganda next at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on June 14, followed by their final match against Papua New Guinea at the same venue on June 17.
