The former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has made an honest admission that he had always felt that the legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi was never happy with his bowling style.
Harbhajan Singh is often regarded as one of the greatest spinners from the Indian subcontinent. He has played in 103 Tests, 236 ODIs, and 28 T20Is for India and remains the third-highest wicket-taker for India across all three formats. He has picked 711 wickets in his career for India, with 417, 269, and 25 wickets, respectively.
Singh, who announced his retirement from international cricket in December 2021, mentioned that the late Indian legend Bedi was someone who always preferred a more traditional flight on the ball. However, Singh confessed he was known more for his variations than flight.
Harbhajan Singh makes revelations about Bishan Singh Bedi's opinion
In a recent discussion with former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on the 'Kutti Stories with Ash' podcast show run on Ashwin's YouTube channel, Harbhajan Singh revealed why he felt Bedi never found him worthy as a spinner, since he did not bowl according to the standards set by the former spinner.
"Honestly, I didn't have a lot of interactions with him. For some reason, I thought he didn't like me a lot. Of course, it could just be my thought. But yeah, I am his huge admirer. I have immense respect for him, and I always sought his blessings whenever I met him."
"But, I've always felt that he wasn't really happy with my bowling. My bowling didn't have the flight that he thought was needed," confirmed Harbhajan Singh on Ashwin's YouTube podcast.
Harbhajan then sided with his own bowling tactics and his opinion on an ideal spinner.
"There was pace, but I didn't think you needed flight to get the batsman out every time. It is where you are pitching it and how you are making him play is what matters."
"That is my opinion, and I am not saying it is absolutely right... It depends on the batter too. If we are giving him time, if he stepping out, then you have to vary. As spinners, we know how to make the batsman play," added Singh.
Harbhajan Singh wants Kuldeep Yadav for the Manchester Test
The former Indian spinner had urged India to bring back Kuldeep Yadav for the fourth Test at Manchester. The spinner, despite being part of the Indian team, has not played in a single game till now.
Indians have relied on all-rounder spinners Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, and are yet to play the specialist spinner on the side. Now, Singh has urged his former teammate Gautam Gambhir to bring him back to halt the English scoring rate.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has now been ruled out from the remaining Tests, hence this might be an opportunity to bring back the Chinaman into the side.
