BCCI Secretary Jay Shah congratulated Indian off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, on his 23-year-long career, stating that his zeal to perform and his presence on the field boosted teammates’ confidence and spirit.

Harbhajan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Friday. He last played for the national side in a T20I against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) back on March 4, 2016. He continued playing franchise cricket in the IPL after that.

Speaking about the legendary off-spinner, Shah’s official BCCI statement read: “Harbhajan Singh has had a phenomenal career with Team India. He has been a part of many memorable victories both at home and away. He played his cricket with grit and passion and wore his heart on his sleeve. His fighting spirit and his zeal to perform for India when the team was under pressure is something that always stood out. His presence on the field lifted everyone’s morale.

Although his bowling records speak for themselves, Harbhajan was not just another tail-ender. He has scored two centuries in Tests, both against New Zealand at home. Even in the ODIs, he has quite a few crucial contributions, including the innings against Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2010.

While he played a major role with the ball, picking up wickets aplenty, it must be remembered that he has also played some crucial knocks with the bat, helping us get over the line. I wish him the best for all his future endeavours and wish to see him being closely associated with the game,” Shah added.

Harbhajan ended with 417 wickets in 103 Tests, the fourth-highest tally of wickets in the longest format for India. He played for three major franchises in the IPL – Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
