Out-of-favour India fast-bowler Harshal Patel has earned a lucrative contract from Punjab Kings in the ongoing IPL auction 2024. The right-arm pacer had registered himself at a base price of Rs 2 crores.
2022 IPL champions Gujarat Titans began the bidding before Punjab Kings made it clear that they wanted the bowler. In no time, the price touched the 5 crores mark as the franchises tried to outbid each other. They took the price past Rs. 10 crores before Lucknow Super Giants replaced Gujarat Titans in the race. Punjab Kings, however, eventually signed up Harshal Patel for Rs. 11.75 crores.
He became the second player in the ongoing auction to touch the 10 crores mark. Before him, Pat Cummins created history and became the costliest player in the history of the IPL as Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him for a whopping Rs 20.50 crores.
Harshal Patel was one of the 11 players released by Royal Challengers Bangalore before the auction. The out-of-favor India pacer began his IPL journey with RCB way back in 2012 before moving to Delhi Capitals in 2018. Before IPL 2021, he secured a trade deal from Delhi to RCB and enjoyed a very productive campaign.
The right-arm fast-bowler picked up a record-equaling 32 wickets and won the Purple cap in his comeback season for RCB. He was then released by the franchise before being bought back by them at a whopping amount of Rs 10.75 crore in the mega auction. Harshal Patel failed to impress in IPL 2023, managing 14 wickets in 13 games while conceding at an economy rate of almost 10 runs per over.
